UNE-EPM got 50 MHz on the 2.5 GHz band and plans to develop LTE
In round 14, it got 10 5 MHz blocks for US$ 40.78 million, outdoing DirecTV. Cristian Toro, VP of Finance and Administration, asserted that the goal of LTE was to offer mobile broadband. The firm UNE-EPM was awarded the tender for 2.5 GHz held today in Bogota by the IT and Communications Department (MINTIC-acronym in Spanish). The company got 50 MHz – in 10 5-MHz blocks – for a total of US$ 40.78 million, after 14 rounds where it competed under the "English Auction" system with DirecTV.
In a talk to Convergencialatina, Cristian Toro, VP of Finance and Administration in UNE-EPM, asserted that the main goal was to offer mobile broadband on LTE. The executive acknowledged the poor development of the said technology at global levels so far, but considered "operations might be starting within a 9-month term, with a limited offer, to later reach full coverage in three years".. Personal started “trial” with LTE technology provided by Ericsson
This experience will enable speeds of up to 50 Mbps; and video calls and HD video streaming tests will be carried out, among other applications. Personal announced today the beginning of its fourth generation (4G) mobile service trial with LTE technology –provided by Ericsson–, which will initially allow to reach top speeds of up to 50 Megabits per second, i.e., 25 times faster than the current 3G mobile broadband services. Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow these topics will be addressed in the Revolución Móvil Latinoamericana.
La Transformación (Latin American Mobile Revolution. The Transformation), an event organized by Convergencia, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Only 3 years have passed since 3G services were introduced, which were initially driven by this same operator. The 4G experience allows for the development of high speed file transfer, video calls and HD video streaming tests, among other applications. +

First call with LTE in the region to be made in 2010
Within the framework of ExpoComm 2009, Guillermo Wichmann, from NSN, assured that the spread of LTE will take place in 2014. The proposal of the company is that LTE is developed in the 2,600 MHz band.
Guillermo Wichmann, business strategy manager for Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), said to Convergencialatina that the first LTE carrier through which a call will be made in the region will be available by the end of 2010. Nokia and Nokia Siemens made first LTE tests over 800 MHz
Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) and Nokia jointly made the first point-to-point data call with LTE over the 800 MHz band, spectrum portion that will be released as the terrestrial television migrates from analog to digital system. Interoperability tests of NSN technology and of Nokia were successful and this, according to the companies, takes a step forward on LTE marketing on this band, specially, for the development in rural areas. It is expected that this year some customers will start to make tests with LTE 800. |
